Flat Tummy Tea is a herbal tea. It is a “2-Step Detox Tea” which includes two different types of tea:
- Activate deflating tea
- Cleanse body cleansing tea
Each tea contains a variety of herbs and spices that, when applied, are believed to reduce bloating and detoxification of the body. The ingredients used in Flat Tummy Tea range from deflating tea (Activate) to those found in Body Cleansing Tea (Cleanse).
Activating tea aid in metabolism and digestion reduces oxidative stress and supports energy. They include:
- Peppermint leaf
- Lemon balm leaf
- Liquorice root
- Dandelion leaf and cleaver root
- Leaf Fennel seed
- Green tea leaf
- Cumin seed
- Cardamom berry
Cleaning ingredients:
Flat Tummy Tea contains the Seven Cleanse Ingredients “help support the body’s natural detoxification process.” Some are the same as those found in Activate tea; others are alone in this tea. These are:
- Senna leaf
- Peppermint leaf
- Cassia Chamaecrista pods
- Liquorice root
- Cumin seeds
- Dandelion root
- Rhubarb root
Health Benefits:
Flat Tummy tea helps reduce swelling, increase energy, support metabolism, detoxify the body, and reduce water retention. They help maintain a healthy immune system.
Peppermint Leaf:
Although Peppermint has been used for thousands of years, often to relieve digestive problems, most of the research conducted has focused on the oil of this plant and not the leaf. That said, Peppermint, in general, offers some health benefits.
For example, a 2017 review reported that Peppermint has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. This makes it suitable for the immune system. A 2019 study adds that it also appears to offer some protection against swelling. Though, again, these studies are about Peppermint as a whole. This makes it still unclear whether peppermint leaf offers the same benefits.
Lemon Balm Leaf:
Lemon balm has been studied for its numerous health benefits, some of which include:
- Decreasing depression and anxiety
- Improved sleep quality
- Reduced blood pressure
- Lower body mass index (BMI)
These effects could make you feel better physically and mentally, thus giving you more energy. And many of these studies specifically involved the use of lemon balm leaf, making it easier to accept this potential claim.
Liquorice Root:
Often used as a sweetener, liquorice helps protect cells in the body from damage or inflammation. However, some researchers warn that liquorice is not always beneficial.
For example, research indicates that it can raise sodium levels by lowering potassium levels. This is usually when the consumption is excessive.
Dandelion Leaf and Root:
There isn’t much scientific evidence for the effects of dandelion, although some promote it as a diuretic. Perhaps this is why it’s included in Flat Tummy tea, to help reduce swelling by decreasing the weight of the dandelion. However, some research has linked dandelion leaves and roots to better blood sugar control. This may help prevent energy drops. It would also promote a healthier metabolism.
A study found that dandelion leaf and lemon balm reduce inflammation in the liver. Since the liver helps in the waste release process, it could be argued that these ingredients could help in the detoxification process when combined because he tends to cling to things. An examination of this plant indicates that it boosts immunity and helps with water retention.
Cleaver Seeds:
The cleaver (Galium aparine) is a climbing plant that goes by various names, such as grip grass and Velcro plant because it tends to cling to objects. A review of this herb indicates that it boosts immunity and helps with water retention
However, these are mostly the seeds and not the leaves. Another review looked at different wild plants and found that cleavers were one of the most effective in helping to remove heavy metals from the body, reducing their toxic effects.
This review used the aboveground parts of the plant, which are the parts that grow above ground and would include the leaves.
Fennel Seed:
Many people know fennel as a vegetable, use it in some recipes, but are less familiar with its seeds. Fennel contains many healthy compounds and is a good source of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc.
Green tea leaf:
Some people drink green tea for its health benefits. These include better digestive health and increased mental alertness, with preliminary studies to support weight loss. The only thing you should know about green tea is caffeine. Like other teas that contain caffeine, like high octane tea, this is great if you want more energy but not as good if you are sensitive to the ingredient. This could be a problem for people trying to limit or eliminate this substance from their diet.
Cumin Seeds:
Many recipes call for cumin seeds, some for rye bread, stews, cakes, and cookies. These seeds give foods a nutty or spicy flavour. A study of 70 overweight and obese women found that consuming 30 ml of cumin extract per day resulted in more significant reductions in weight, body mass index, and body fat percentage without affecting their body weight, diet, or level of physical activity. This suggests that cumin may be effective as a natural weight loss supplement.
Cardamom Pods:
Research indicates that cardamom is good. Oral health by helping protect against infections and periodontal disease. Cardamom is also said to help the body metabolize sugars, but there isn’t much research on whether this plant works for this purpose. Although one study found it to help metabolize fat, leading to healthier cholesterol levels.
Senna leaf:
The United Nations National Library of Medicine reports that senna (Cassia Angustifolia) is a herb that has been approved as an over-the-counter laxative. This herb is also found in other teas, such as Ballerina tea.
However, long-term use of senna leaf, which is defined as use for more than two weeks, is not recommended, nor taken in large doses, as it may lead to heart function problems: liver damage, and more. The drug adds that senna can interact with birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, blood thinners, and diuretics. When combined with liquorice (which is also found in flat stomach tea), it can cause potassium levels to drop too low.
